I've been too busy with work+personal life to do much recreational programming
(or blogging) lately, but hopefully will "return" next week. I'd like then to
prepare a publishable version of my .emacs file, but I have
the same problem as Steve Yegge. Mine may even be worse, because I didn't
start using Emacs until after customize was well-nigh universal, and I've been
pretty scrupulous about configuring everything setting-like1 using it. It
makes the configuration for all the Emacs packages I use easier to handle, but
significantly harder to share.
I may just have to bite the bullet and divide my custom-set-variables form
using initsplit.el2. Any other ideas?

I'd like to see something like initsplit that groups customizations based on the group they belong to, so your autogenerated out 'custom-set-variables' would look something like
(custom-set-variables ; ruby '(ruby-indent-level 2) ... ; nxml ... )
then it'd be relatively easy to pick out the appropriate customizations - using a regex just seems clumsy somehow.
I just watched the screencast, and I'm very impressed. And I, too, and dying to see your .emacs.
The part that most intrigued me was: how do you get your speedbar to live in an emacs "window" like that, instead of in a separate frame the way it usually wants to be?

Cool screencast, but I couldn't help but think just how depressingly ugly Emacs is. I don't think I could work with it on a daily basis. Ugly, unintuitive software makes work less fun.
It does seem to have some nice features but it didn't seem to have anything that TextMate doesn't (or that I can't do by quickly pulling up a console).
That said, I'm not trying to put Emacs down, its just not for me. And if you aren't on OSX then is probably one of the best around (though I quite liked JEdit when I was using Linux).
Like I said though, thanks for doing the screencast - it inspired me to write a post about TextMate on my blog (http://www.lukeredpath.co.uk/2006/10/30/exploring-textmate-a-ruby-perspective).
Luke: if you hide the menubar and toolbar, (as you should; they are a waste of space) all you're dealing with is plain text. Then it's just up to your font choices; bad fonts => ugly, good fonts => nice.
As for unintuitive; well that's just a matter of what your own intuitions are. I find after using Emacs for a while I can't stand to go back to things like Firefox or Gaim that force you to use the mouse; it just seems so inflexible and archaic.
I just watched the video; it's quite nice. I wonder if it wouldn't be helpful to have a cheat sheet companion that could show how the tasks you accomplish are done. Since everything's done on the keyboard, viewers can't see how things are done. So while you definitely get that wow factor, I feel like I'd learn more from it if it were annotated some how.
It also would be useful to note which packages certain functionality comes from since the video seems to imply this is all from a stock Emacs installation.
But all in all it is quite a good video.

Well Emacs doesn't have to be ugly - there is a version that supports Gtk2, and recently also a cvs branch with Xft - meaning you get antialiased fonts and so on... Choose a nice one, change the colors and its as pretty as everything else.

technomancy: I have a blog post where I describe where the various features demoed come from. I've finally linked to it from the screencast, so people should be able to find it now. As for showing off key strokes, that would be a good idea. I'm not sure how best to do that though -- displaying all keypresses would be distracting, but adding them in manually would be fault-prone and tedious.
Luke: Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably formulate a response of sorts as a blog post. One item though -- I wish that TextMate weren't OS X only. Not owning Mac hardware makes it difficult for me to really evauate it and others' claims about it. Even if Emacs isn't as pretty, all its features are free-as-in-speech and available on almost every platform under the sun.

llasram - its a fair point and I wished the same thing before I got my MacBook. But to be honest, and without wanting to start a holy war here, buying my MacBook was one of the best computer purchasing decisions that I've made and TextMate itself was worth every penny (as was the mac).
I keep going back to see how TextMate is developing (and I paid for a license). I generally play with it for a while, thinking "Mmm... that's nice..." as I discover the stuff that's changed since my last play.
And then, after a little longer, it starts to drive me mad. The most obvious thing is not being able to split windows, but other details niggle. One thing that I wish was better is the indentation engine, I'm afraid this commentbox probably isn't the right place to discuss it in detail, but most my problems with it arise when I start trying to break a long line.
TextMate is a fabulous piece of work, and it's great to see how quickly something like that can be developed using the Cocoa toolchain, but I may be too much of a dinosaur - I've been an emacs user on and off these 20 years and all that accumulated muscle memory is a hard thing to shake off.
